Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Grimaud "Jeu Marseille"
Mint, sealed deck of fantastic cards printed by Grimaud and edited and published by Andre Dimanche, c.1983, titled «Le Jeu de Marseille.» The deck was conceived in Marseille during a meeting of the Surrealists in 1940, and the aces and court cards were designed by 8 surrealist artists (2 cards each) – Victor Brauner, Andre Breton, Oscar Dominguez, Max Ernst, Jacques Herold, Wilfredo Lam, Jacqueline Lamba, and Andre Masson. These designs were then copied by Robert Delangade in one session. The ...

$825 USDDouble Deck Acanthe “Leonor Fini Jeu de Cartes” Playing Cards, Leonor Fini Designs, Leather Bookshelf Cases, c.1950

Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Acanthe "Leonor Fini"
Gorgeous playing cards designed by Leonor Fini, the famous and sensational surrealist artist, and printed in eleven colors by Acanthe of Paris, c.1950. This brief biography of Fini on a website of the Sprightwood Galleries, is a very good overview: “Leonor Fini's art offers a woman's take on surrealism, which largely dealt with male fantasies, by offering a female view of the female body and of erotic pleasures. Fini was one of the more international figures of the Surrealist movement. She was ...
Grimaud "Jeu Louis XV" Playing Cards, No. 1502, c.1926

$85 USDGrimaud "Jeu Louis XV" Playing Cards, No. 1502, c.1926

Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Grimaud "Louis Xv"
Gorgeous deck of Grimaud’s justly celebrated “Jeu Louis XV” cards, with beautiful court cards in period dress. Fournier dates this deck to 1890, and the French 1890 tax stamp is on the Ace of Clubs. However, this deck was purchased along with a red deck, since sold, that was in a wrapper that bore a date of 1926, and Grimaud published these cards for many years. I have dated these cards to the date of the stamp on the wrapper of the red deck. The box bears a sticker from Schreiber of Paris. ...

$150 USDDouble Deck Draeger Freres “Ciel de France” Playing Cards, Miro Company Publisher, Jacques Branger Designs, c.1948

Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Draeger Freres "Ciel De France"
Mint, sealed (cards, not box) double deck of the wonderful “Ciel de France” cards made by Draeger Freres and published by Miro Company, c.1948, with outstanding original designs on the court cards by Jacques Branger. The card faces shown in three of the pictures are from an open, lightly used double deck of the cards that are also for sale in this shop (see, T0000609). They come in a different box, with different backs, and are probably a different edition. But they give a sense of what the ...

Mint, sealed deck of beautiful cards by Grimaud, titled in French "Michel-Ange," printed in 1975, the 500th anniversary of the year of Michelangelo's birth. The first two pictures are of the deck here for sale; the remaining pictures showing the faces of the cards are from a open deck recently sold in this shop. The insert card states that the deck was conceived/designed ("realiser") by "le maitre-cartier J.-M. Simon," and I believe that the back of the cards is a Simon design. If it is from a ...

$350 USDPhilibert "Les Mousquetaires" Playing Cards, Albert Dubout Designs, c.1954

Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Philibert "Les Mousquetaires"
Exceptional set of "Les Mousquetaires" cards, published by Philibert c.1954, with designs by Albert Dubout, noted French cartoonist, illustrator, painter and sculptor. It is the earliest of the famous Philibert decks. I have always understood that the decks published by Philibert were actually printed by Draeger Freres; however, Fournier reports that this deck was printed by Philibert. The Dubout designs on the court cards feature the Three Musketeers, and other characters from the Dumas novel. ...
3-Deck Set Grimaud “Le Jeu des Papes” Playing Cards, Holy Year (Jubilee), 1983

$115 USD3-Deck Set Grimaud “Le Jeu des Papes” Playing Cards, Holy Year (Jubilee), 1983

Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Grimaud "Jeu Des Papes"
Sealed 3-deck set of cards made by Grimaud in 1983, a Holy Year (Jubilee) proclaimed by Pope John Paul II to mark 1950 years since Christ’s death and resurrection in the year 33. The cards were made to commemorate that Holy Year and on the occasion of a visit from Pope John Paul II at Lourdes on August 14, 1983. I have only these sealed decks, and though made only 24 years ago, the cards are rare. I can find no images on the Internet. One of the insert cards states that the cards depict the 264 ...
Grimaud “Patience” Playing Cards, Algerian Tax Stamp, c.1926

$35 USDGrimaud “Patience” Playing Cards, Algerian Tax Stamp, c.1926

Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Grimaud "Algeria" Patience
Lovely deck of patience playing cards, made by Grimaud for sale in Algeria, with an Algerian tax stamp on the Ace of Spades used in Algeria from 1912 to 1940. I have dated that cards to the mid-point in that range, but it is possible that the cards date to any of the years during that period. There are 52 cards in the deck, plus a wonderful Joker that I have not seen before, but that may be more common than I know. The cards are French suited, with English court cards and court indices (i.e., K, ...
Draeger Freres “Classique” Playing Cards, c.1950

$175 USDDraeger Freres “Classique” Playing Cards, c.1950

Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Draeger Freres "Classique"
Beautiful deck of cards designed, published, and printed c.1950 by Draeger Freres. According to Fournier, the deck is titled “Classique,” perhaps because the court cards, though decidedly modern, are reminiscent of very early French court cards. The deck reported in Fournier has 32 cards, but the set here for sale has 52 cards, plus 2 Jokers. The cards are bridge/whist size measuring 91mm x 59mm; there is no box. The cards are in “as new” condition. Reference: Fournier, Playing Cards, France 400 ...

Extraordinary deck of cards devoted to the life and works of Oscar Wilde, the famous Irish playwright/novelist/poet etc. The conceptual design for the deck was supplied by Richard Ellman, a biographer of Wilde (and noted James Joyce scholar), and the artwork is by Rosita Fanto. One of the extra cards in the deck is a presentation card, which reads: “Richard Ellman & R. Fanto Present the Oscar Wilde Playing Cards.” It is my understanding that the actual printing of the deck was done by Grimaud ...

$45 USDGrimaud Playing Cards, Standard Belgian Pattern, c.1910

Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Grimaud Belgian Pattern
Excellent deck of Grimaud's celebrated Belgian pattern playing cards. Grimaud is said to have first produced the Belgian pattern deck in or about 1860, but this deck is a later edition. The tax stamp on the Ace of Hearts is a Spanish tax stamp for 30 centimos, which places the deck within the period 1907-1911. There is no box. It is a full deck of 52 cards. I do not believe that a joker was ever part of this deck. The cards measure 87mm x 57mm, and are in excellent condition. The gold gilt at ...

$40 USDPhilibert "Paris Scenes" Playing Cards, c.1960

Collectibles:Playing Cards France:Philibert "Paris Scenes"
Gorgeous souvenir deck by Philibert, c.1960, showing color photographic views of Paris. Each card has superimposed over the photograph in gold gilt, both the name of the building, monument, etc. depicted, and the name and inclusive dates of a famous person from French history. However, I do not believe that the person whose name is given on each card necessarily has any relationship to the building, monument, etc. depicted. For example, the Ace of Hearts has a photograph of Notre Dame but the ...

Mint double deck of playing cards made for Hermes of Paris, featuring the brilliant designs of renowned illustrator Cassandre (Adolphe Moulon); it is the "third version" of these cards printed by Grimaud instead of Draeger-Freres, with solid color backs. I do not know when these cards were made, but note that Draeger-Freres made playing cards until 1967, if not later. I have assumed that these cards were printed by Grimaud after that year, but there are many reasons why the cards might have been ...
