Dondorf Playing Cards, "Children’s Cards" (“Kinder-Karte”), No. 25, Patience Size, c

$115 USDDondorf Playing Cards, "Children’s Cards" (“Kinder-Karte”), No. 25, Patience Size, c.1890s

Antiques:Playing Cards Germany:Dondorf 25 ("Children's Cards")
Excellent deck of Dondorf's lovely and charming "Kinder-Karte" (“Children’s Cards”) patience size cards, No. 25. According to the World Web Playing Card Museum, this edition dates from 1880-1910, and so I have dated it to the middle of that range, c.1890s. The deck is complete at 52 cards (never a Joker), with gold gilt at the corners; there is no box. The court cards depict children in royal dress. The cards are actually slightly smaller than a standard patience size, measuring 55mm x 37mm. The ...
Double Deck Dondorf “Baronesse” No. 163 Patience Playing Cards, Theissinger Custom Box, c.1890

$100 USDDouble Deck Dondorf “Baronesse” No. 163 Patience Playing Cards, Theissinger Custom Box, c.1890s

Antiques:Playing Cards Germany:Dondorf 163 ("Baronesse") (2)
Excellent double deck of Dondorf “Baronesse” No. 163 patience playing cards. The decks are in their original card boxes, and both card boxes are in a custom “Patience” box made for Theissinger, the renowned Frankfurt stationer. The card boxes, in turn, are interesting because, while they bear the Dondorf No. 163, a “Baronesse” number, and contain “Baronesse” cards, they also have “Cartes pour Dames” written on the sides. “Cartes pour Dames” is the name generally associated with Dondorf No. 27 ...
Dondorf Playing Cards, “Luxus-Spielkarte Vier-Erdteile” (“Luxury Playing Cards Four Continents

$600 USDDondorf Playing Cards, “Luxus-Spielkarte Vier-Erdteile” (“Luxury Playing Cards Four Continents”) No. 207, Friedrich Karl Hausmann Designs, c.1870s

Antiques:Playing Cards Germany:Dondorf 207 ("Vier Erdteile")
Excellent deck of Dondorf’s extraordinary “Vier Erdteile” (“Four Continents”) playing cards, featuring designs by Friedrich Karl Hausmann. This is an early edition, with square corners and backs that portray an elegant woman standing on an airborne globe. The Keller catalogue of the Cary collection dates a very similar deck to 1885, but from the information give in the Cary description, there are slight differences that suggest that the deck here for sale dates even earlier, and I have dated it ...
Dondorf Playing Cards, “Empire” No. 172, c.1900

$125 USDDondorf Playing Cards, “Empire” No. 172, c.1900

Antiques:Playing Cards Germany:Dondorf 172 ("Empire")
Very good deck of Dondorf’s charming “Empire” cards, made c.1900, featuring very youthful figures on the court cards. The Aces have the word Ace written just below the suit sign, and the Queens have the abbreviation Qn, rather than simply Q. The cards are large, measuring 92mm x 61mm, with gold gilt at the corners, and they come in the original box. The cards are in very good condition, and it would be possible to describe the condition as excellent, except for two cards (separately pictured) ...
Vereinigte Stralsunder Spielkarten Fabrik AG “Berlin Pattern” (Heidborn) Skat Playing Cards w/

$110 USDVereinigte Stralsunder Spielkarten Fabrik AG “Berlin Pattern” (Heidborn) Skat Playing Cards w/ Leather Case, c.1880

Antiques:Playing Cards Germany:Vssf "Berlin Pattern"
Exceptional set of cards made by Vereinigte Stralsunder Spielkarten Fabrik AG, Berlin Pattern, c.1880. The Ace of Hearts has an “old eagle” tax stamp, the Jack of Clubs identifies VSSF as the maker, and the Queen of Clubs bears the notation, “fruher L v. d Osten L. Heidborn T Wegener,” with the “fruher” meaning “formerly” in English. Osten, Heidborn, and Wegener were three 19th century card makers in Stralsund, and it is my understanding that VSSF was formed in 1872 out of a merger of the three ...

$200 USDDouble Deck C.L. Wüst “House Pattern” Playing Cards, c.1880s

Antiques:Playing Cards Germany:C.L. Wust "House Pattern"
Beautiful double deck of C.L. Wüst “House Pattern” playing cards, with an “old eagle” tax stamp used during the period 1879-1888. The courts are the courts of what Shaw and Symons call “House Pattern Type 1,” but the Aces of these decks are simple aces and do not portray German scenes. Each deck is complete at 52 cards (never a Joker). The cards are have square corners, without indices, and are on wonderful card stock. The cards are large, measuring 93mm x 63mm, and come in the original box. The ...

The Jack of Clubs reads "B. Dondorf" and "Frankfort a/m,” and there are no indices. The decks are complete at 52 cards (never a joker), and the cards are slightly small by contemporary standards, measuring 85mm by 58mm. The cards are in excellent condition, without issues and quite clean. The box is in ...

Very good deck of Dondorf's wonderful "Cartes Pour Dames" (“Four Corners of the World”) cards, No.27, the earlier edition with square corners and the Dondorf name on each of the backs. According to the World Web Playing Card Museum, this edition dates to the period 1868-1900, and I have dated this deck to the approximate midpoint of this range. It is a patience size deck (64mm x 43mm). The Aces depict scenic wonders of four regions of the world: Diamonds the Americas, Hearts Europe, Spades Asia, ...

Antiques:Playing Cards Germany:Frommann & Bunte Transformation
NOTE: The description of these cards has been modified. Fine, complete deck of the famous transformation cards published by Frommann & Bunte, c.1860. The designs are printed in brown ink, thought to be the earliest of the editions of this deck published, with the letters M and F appearing inside the outer pips of the 8 of Diamonds. This deck has 19 designs in common with the Braun & Schneider sheets published in Germany in or about 1850, 23 designs in common with the Jeanne l’Hachette deck ...

Hoffman/Dietrich shows these cards as Gaigel-Karten No. 237, and in the Cary Collection catalogue, Keller identifies them as Dondorf No. 240 (also a Gaigel deck, 2x24). The deck of these cards in Fournier has 36 cards, including the 6 in each suit. The World Web Playing Card Museum gives these cards the title, “"Doppelkoepfige," for use in Doppelkopf, another German game using a 48-card deck (2x24). This set is a skat deck, with the ...
