Navy Calico and White "Bear Paw" Quilt

This crisp navy blue figured calico quilt dates from between 1865 and 1890. It is 60" X 78" and will fit a twin size bed, or it may be used as a decorating accessory. It looks nice folded over the back of the sofa or hanging on the wall. This traditional pattern has other names such as Duck's Foot, Hand of Friendship, Goose Tracks, and Lily Design. This 100% cotton quilt is in excellent condition and shows little wear, although the whites have yellowed a bit from age. The quilt is rather thick so that the quilting (7-8 stitches per inch) stands out in relief. The piecing and feather circle quilting are completely by hand in this old piece. There is one almost invisible repair on the binding, where a 2" section of navy fabric has been replaced. This quilt was found in Northern Illinois near the Quad Cities.
