This interesting box is varnished inside and out. The outer marquetry design is a veneer composed of strips of wood glued together to form a geometric design. The design covers every surface of the box except the bottom. Woods used are pine, oak, walnut, and maple. The molding around the bottom and the knobs are walnut. This pretty 19th century box was originally used for patches (decorative beauty marks added to a lady's face during her toilette). It is white hand-blown milk glass glazed dark blue and decorated with colorful raised enamel decoration. The fittings are brass. There are no marks on this box. It is 2 1/2" in diameter and 1 3/8" high. It is in excellent condition.

This cute little box has a marquetry inlay design of two perky scotties, one white and one brown, on its top. The sides are inlaid as well. There is a knob on the top that causes a drawer to pop open when it is pushed down. The finish is worn a bit but smooth. The box is marked on the bottom "Made in Japan." It probably dates from around the end of World War II, but it could date from before the war. The box is 4 3/4" X 3 3/4" X 2 1/4" high.

This very interesting wooden box is handmade of contrasting color woods, probably walnut and maple. The style of the workmanship is American; the date of manufacture is between World War I and World War II. It is in the shape of an Aztec temple. This box appears to be English in origin; one of the woods is probably rosewood; the bottom is pine. The construction is excellent; it was made by a skilled cabinetmaker; even after 150 years, there are no splits or cracks in the panels. The brass bail was cast.
