The expression on this mature lady is direct and thoughtful. She is in very excellent condition, especially for her age! German-made, the hand-painted face has blue eyes, low single-stroke brows, rosy cheeks, serious original red mouth and nostril dots under her carved nose. There is subtle age crackling on the head and chest. Her hair is painted black with thinner painted hair draped from forehead to ears, which are pierced with the original gold wire & wire dangles. Beautifully and skillfully made, the head and torso are carved as one with tiny waist and curved chest. Upper arms and legs are hollowed wood with swivel mortise & tenon joints at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees – most of her joints work easily, the right elbow only bends a little because of the carving. The lower limbs are carved: cupped mitten-hands, and flat feet painted with red shoes & cream stockings. The lady's original clothing is homespun: red linsey-woolsey, black & cream gingham, and red, black & blue plaid. Underneath is a bodice of miniscule calico print, and petticoats of wool flannel & polished cotton. A red challis shawl wraps her shoulders; lower legs are wrapped with black wool for warmth. The Welsh costume is complete with a tall black stovepipe hat on top of her crisp white lace-edged cap. She’s an admirable addition for any collection. All original paint no repair. From a non smoking home.
