Huge J.E.Caldwell Wood Box Sterling 1880 Coffee/Tea Set

Elegant and elaborate and brilliantly wrought, this gorgeous J.E. Caldwell 5-piece sterling Coffee & Tea Service, from the Helen Street Chidsey family of Philadelphia, retains the original mahogany fitted chest stamped "J.E. Caldwell and Co. // Philadelphia" in gold inside the lid. The service is in excellent to mint condition, weighing a total 96.72 troy oz (3008 grams). Pieces are marked: "J.E. Caldwell & Co. // Philadelphia // 925 Sterling 1000 // 806". Four of the five pieces are marked with liquid capacity amounts. A swirling hand-engraved "HSC" monogram embellishes one side of each piece. Scrolls, fruit and leaves are heavily applied on handles, spouts and rims, which include applied gadroon. The bodies have lobed sides and sit upon fanciful scrolled feet. Coffee Pot: 9" tall, 12" wide from handle to spout; hinged lid; 4 pints Teapot: 6" tall, 12.5" wide from handle to spout; hinged lid; 3 pints Sugar Bowl: 5.5" tall, 9.75" wide from handle to spout; separate lid Creamer: 4.75" tall, 7.5" wide from handle to spout; 1.25 pints Waste Bowl: 3.5" high, 7" wide from side to side; .75 pints Bone discs keep heat from traveling into the handles, two each on coffee pot & teapot. The custom order, fitted mahogany chest measures 22.5" wide, 16.5" deep and 11.5" high. Swathes of finest emerald-green velvet line the interior, which has raised foot fittings and the pieces only seat one way so they are secure in transit. A rare chest of dazzling treasure!! All excellent from a non smoking home.
