Looking just like he does in the
cartoons, Popeye is jaunty and comical. He's in very good un-faded
colorful condition retaining his nail & dowel 'corncob' pipe, wooden
cap & cap-button with celluloid visor, and the decal 'tattoos' on his
super-muscled arms. There is a perfect round label on the bottom of
his left foot: "J. CHEIN & CO. // Harrison, N.J. // Made In U.S.A.";
stamped on bottom of right foot: "© // King Features // Syn., Inc. //
1932". The intriguing thing about this Pop-Eye is his construction –J.
Chein manufactured his composition head, wooden hat, upper arms, legs
and feet; Cameo Doll Co. manufactured his composition body and
muscle-arms. If the other parts from Chein and/or Cameo are owned,
then this guy can turn into TWO PopEye jointed figures! Please see
"Composition & Wood Dolls and Toys" by Michele Carl for reference:
Cameo on pg. 21, and J. Chein on pg. 35. There is serious crazing on
his composition parts but no fading, and only a small 1/4"x 1/2" piece
missing from torso paint. PopEye will look great on display alone or
with others of his gang!
