1890s German Kid-skin 4” DONKEY NODDER with Sidesaddle

A most fascinating circa 1890 toy, this adorable antique Nodding Donkey is distinguished by his red Sidesaddle, just perfect for a tiny doll to ride on.He is in excellent condition and still nodding amiably, yet somewhat showing his age with ears and side-saddle having been reattached. He is 4” tall, 4” long and 1.5” at the widest, of papier-mâché with wooden legs and fully covered in grey hand-painted kid-skin with white lower legs and muzzle. His hand-painted details of black nostrils, mouth, ear-tips, hooves and stripes on his shoulders, plus the tiny amber glass eyes, enhance his sweet expression. A strip of fur serves as his mane, with a bit at the end of his tail. Super-thin leather bridle and reins make his tack, and the sidesaddle is covered in red kid with soft metal stirrups (wear to the upper edge of red kid). What a great little fellow - the way his head nods is so endearing!n Very clean from a non smoking home.
