What
a charming Bavarian chalet-looking toy this is! Wooden factory-made in
Germany around the turn of the 20th century. The first
level is painted in cream & grey, with 3 stalls and a grooming
area. The stalls have a feed trough across at the back, and 3 metal
feed bins above. The bottom sides & upper story & eaves have
lithographed paper in green, cream & rusty red over wood that
represent siding, windows and shutters. There are cute little hearts
and squares on the shutters paper. The roof pieces are painted maroon
& red, with the edges of the front eave in grey pinstriped with
cream. On the front of the upper story are a centered hinged door
& 2 windows, plus one window in the eave. The door is painted
green with cream stripes - when open, there is room for bales of hay
or a small bed-sitting room (for the horse’s groom). Someone in the
past has cut out a section of wood above the door-maybe the child had
a giraffe stored up there? In pencil on the back is written
"Edward" in script & child-written "ED"; in pencil on the
bottom is "5874" (with the European 7) which is probably a stock
number. There is some paper loss on the front upper edge, side bottom
panels and side eave. All you need to move in are some carved wooden
horses!
