Unusual Vintage "Mother" Wire Pin with Heart Charm & Hidden Secret!

This dainty 3 1/4" wide pin could be brass. It has a mother of pearl heart charm attached and has a "c" style clasp.

The coiled wire is wrapped around a long silver steel straight pin which can actually can be removed. (Could this be an earlier version of a defense weapon!) It sort of looks like a saber - a dainty link chain is attached from the handle to to the loop under the word "Mother" in brass script. I would think this vintage pin is from the WWII era, circa 1940-50's.
