Victorian Woven Silk Portrait “An Important Secret” by Krieger

Submitted for your consideration is a gorgeous portrait of two boys that is woven with silk by the German artist Krieger. This charming portrait is entitled: “An Important Secret” and it depicts the young lads standing in a winter’s scene, one whispering a secret to the other. The Englishman Thomas Stevens perhaps best employed the art of portrait silk weaving, and he is so identified with this process that all of these works of art are known as Stevengraphs.

Please note the rich texture of this marvelous item that can only be attained through the weaving of fine silk. The image at first appears as if it is a photograph negative in dark black and grey tones, but upon closer inspection one can see the hints of color achieved through the addition of other colored threads. One young fellow’s yellow jacket, the soft green of the plants, and the bright white hue of the snow combine to present a hauntingly beautiful image. This work measures 15” by 19” framed, and the portrait measures 7.5” by 10.5”. The work is framed with an appropriate linen matte and the frame itself is a lovely dark burled wood. This artwork would enhance the wall of any room and it can be had for $525.00.
