Submitted for your consideration is an antique bird lithograph that was drawn by John Gould and prepared by his wife Elizabeth. The print is entitled “Cinclosoma Ocellatum” (the white spotted laughing thrush), and it comes from the edition of “A Century of Birds from the Himalayan Mountains” that was printed in 1831-1832. The printer’s name, C. Hullmandel is credited on the work.
This work was the first of Gould’s famous imperial folios and as such often commands a premium price. The stone lithograph is lovely in its tasteful simplicity. A lone bird is shown perched upon a tree branch and the subtle coloring is naturalistic. Elizabeth Gould was responsible for over 80 of the illustrations that were taken from her husband’s drawings for this set. The print measures 19” by 12”, its framed size is 22” by 15” and it is in very good condition with no tears although there is some foxing as shown in the photographs. Gould prints often fetch prices in the thousands, but we can offer this attractive example of his work for $675.00.
