Dedicated to Finding Value as well as Beauty!
Submitted for your consideration is a magnificent bronze figural Art Nouveau mirror by the highly regarded sculptor Charles Jonchery (1873-1937). This work consists of a beveled glass mirror with a classic floral Art Nouveau border design that is being held up by two playful youths. The bronze work has the artist’s signature embedded into the base and the work rests on a circular piece of marble.
This work is entitled “La Maraude” a whimsical reference to the Napoleonic policy of having his army feed itself by pillaging the land that they invaded. In this instance the young men are depicted climbing a tree to grasp the fruit that is part of the border design of the mirror. This work measures 21” in height, it is 12” wide, and it is in excellent condition. It dates from the early portion of the past century and the mirror is in unusual good condition given its age. As a testament to its utilitarian purpose, the mirror swivels.
We have seen similar works by Jonchery sell for over $15,000 at major auction houses, but thanks to a savvy purchase we can offer this wonderful example of his work for a most reasonable $2750.00.
