Submitted for your consideration is an interesting study of a horse tethered to a hitching post by the master German artist P.J. Mene. Mene (1810-1877) was considered by many to be one of the greatest porcelain and bronze sculptors of his time. He frequently exhibited at the Salons of Paris and was often accorded a medal for his submissions. He was also awarded the gold medal at the London exhibitions of 1855 and 1861. A perfectionist by nature, Mene insisted that every aspect of his creations be reflected in the castings that made him famous.

Here we have a prime example of his extraordinary work. What a magnificent creature he has created in this effort. The horse is shown leaning forward, his muscular frame in evidence, his posture perfect, his head pointed straight ahead while his mane and tail seem as if they are being blown by the wind. As previously stated, the work is a tribute to the artist’s attention to detail, as every aspect of the piece adds to the symmetry of the artwork. The sculpture measures 7.25" by 9.5" by 4" and it is in excellent condition with only some minor age related wear. The work has a rich brown patina as shown in the photographs. Mene’s work has been featured in many of the top auction houses in the world, often fetching increasingly high prices, but we can offer this wonderful example of the work of a major craftsman for $1200.00
