Submitted for your consideration is a stunning pair of Art Nouveau bronze candlesticks on speckled green marble bases by the highly sought after American artist, Edward McCartan (1879-1947). McCartan was a New York sculptor who was strongly influenced by the French master, Jean-Antoine Houdon. After returning from his artistic studies in Paris and Rome in 1914, he began to establish a reputation for excellence. This led to many high profile commissions such as the design of the figures depicting Industry and Transportation above the clock of the Hemsley Building in New York, as well as creations for Lafayette College, the New Jersey Telephone Building and the Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. His works are owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and his many awards include the gold Medal of Honor from the Allied Artists of America in 1933.

This is truly a magnificent example of this talented artists work. McCartan was fascinated with the ancient cultures of Greece and Rome, and this appreciation can be seen in the Amphora vases that rest upon the shoulders of these two Art Nouveau figures and serve as the receptacle for the candles. Traditionally, these vases were used to carry wine or oil and the intricate design of the handled pieces are beautiful. Please note the exquisite nature of the young boy and girl. Perfectly sculpted figures, from the stylistic curves of their forms, to the detailed creation of their hair and the elegance of their limbs. Both figures are shown standing on a ball that is affixed to a gracefully designed base, which in turn rests upon a lovely piece of speckled green marble. The artist name appears on each of the bronze bases.

The candlesticks measure approximately 17” in height with the young girl figure scantly higher than her male counterpart. The works are in excellent, if not Mint condition. The figures have developed a rich, dark patina that enhances their beauty. McCartan’s works have sold in many of the world’s finest auction houses, and his bronze works have been know to fetch prices in excess of $50,000. We are able to offer this magnificent pair of figural candlesticks for $9600.00.
