Submitted for your consideration is a classic art deco style print from Erte, the artist who virtually defined the period. The Russian-born painter Romain de Tirtoff, who called himself Erté after the French pronunciation of his initials, was one of the foremost fashion and stage designers of the early twentieth century. From the sensational silver lamé costume, complete with pearl wings and ebony-plumed cap, that he wore to a ball in 1914, to his magical and elegant designs for the Broadway musical Stardust in 1988, Erté pursued his chosen career with unflagging zest and creativity for almost 80 years. On his death in 1990, he was hailed as the "prince of the music hall" and "a mirror of fashion for 75 years".
Please note the archetypical characteristics of this famous work. We have the slender model that is stylishly attired in a form fitting black gown that is accented by a fur stole and a complementary headdress. On her leash is a black slender dog, the epitome of an art deco animal. The print is signed in the plate and is on a fine silver paper. The image measures 19.5” by 21.75”, and the framed work measures 30.5” by 32.75”. The print is in excellent shape as is the double matting. The frame is in very good condition with some age related wear as shown in the photograph.
Erte is perhaps the most famous and is certainly one of the most collectable artists of the past century. We can offer this lovely example of his work for $350.00.
