Submitted for your consideration is a luminous reverse painting on glass of a traditional Indian dancer. Eglomise is a process where the backside of the glass is gilded with gold or metal leaf using a gelatin adhesive. The result is a mirror-like, reflective finish in which designs are then engraved. The technique dates back to the pre-Roman eras, but its name is derived from 18th century French decorator and art-dealer Jean-Baptise Glomy (1711-1786) who is responsible for its repopularization.
Please note what a stunning example this work is. The image is of a beautiful young woman who is in traditional garb as an Indian Dancer. The colors of her costume are vibrant and seem to leap out at the viewer. The red, greens, blues and gold’s present a delightful collage of hues. The painting measures 11” by 8.5” and the framed work is 14.5” by 12.25”. The picture is in wonderful condition but the frame, which is original to the piece and sports a tin backing, is distressed as shown in the photographs. We can offer this charming piece of folk art for $425.00.
