Submitted for your consideration is an antique game platter from one of the premiere producers of Limoges porcelain. The Bawo and Dotter (Elite Works) factory manufactured high quality porcelain plates from the 1860s until 1932. This particular plate bears the under glaze mark that was used after 1900. The over glaze decorating mark is one that this company only used from 1900 until the 1914. This dates this piece to sometime during this 14-year period. Limoges is a generic term applied to the many factories that created exquisite porcelain wares in the town of Limoges, France. Hand painted pieces were decorated in two different manners. In one case, the factory hired professional artists who were tasked with creating beautiful paintings on individual pieces of porcelain. The second scenario involved the company selling blank forms that were then shipped to many different studios, schools and homes, where they were also hand painted by either professional or talent amateur artists. In either case, what resulted is a singular work of art, one that is as unique as it is lovely. This item is an example of the first method.

This is a breathtakingly beautiful platter signed by the factory artist J. Barbarin as shown in the photograph. Please note the way this talented artist has captured the very essence of three wild game birds as they forage for food in a serene meadow. The birds are superbly colored. Bright blue feathers on their sides and crowns meld into the darker feathers of their coats and contrast expertly with their white colored bodies. An ornately decorated outer border that is painted in gilt, and a red interior border that has a gilt floral design frame the platter.

The platter measures 18” by 12.75” and it is in excellent condition. There are no chips, crack, hairlines or crazing. The portrait painting is also in excellent condition. The only flaw is a loss of some of the gilt paint that forms the interior border floral design and is shown in the photographs. We have seen game platters of this quality with estimated prices of nearly $4000.00, but we can offer this wonderfully collectable work for $2250.00.
