Submitted for your consideration is a wonderful oil painting of a cat in the surrealistic style by David Schmidtke. The surrealistic movement was influenced by Freudianism and dedicated to the expression of imagination as revealed in dreams, free of the conscious control of reason and free of convention. Perhaps its greatest practitioner was the famous and scandalous Spanish artist Salvatore Dali.

Please note the charming whimsy of this adorable little painting. The cat’s head is disproportionately large, and it sits atop a tree whose branches end in colored balls rather than blossoms. A dark red sun invades what is an interior scene adding to the dreamlike quality of the imagery. A blue-footed pot with spiked vines completes this artistic setting. The painting bursts with color. The yellow wall gives way to a bright orange floor, providing an interesting background to the works main figure. What a wonderful gift this would make for any cat lover who appreciates this fascinating artistic movement, one whose origin is the 1920s, but is still in practice today. The painting measures 6.5” by 7.75”. It is recessed into a black box like wooden frame with a gilt border and the framed work measures 10.75” by 11.75”.
