Art Deco German Gilt Metal Alabaster and Marble Bookends ca 1930

Submitted for your consideration is an exquisite pair of art deco bookends from Germany. These bookends are Gilt Metal Goddesses on Horseback. Please note the striking detail of these hauntingly attractive statues. The women are beautiful, their facial images carved out of alabaster. The rest of their form as well as the horse that they are riding are cast in metal. This portion of the set has developed a deep brown patina. The horses are shown rearing and the maidens have one hand gripped to the mane of the animal while the other is lifted behind their heads in an attempt to maintain balance.

The bookends are affixed to a dark veined green marble that serves as a perfect complement to the sculptures. The bookends are quite heavy and are in very good condition with only some minor age related wear. There is one blemish to one of the metal columns as shown in the photographs, and while the base of one has felt, the other does not. Also, one of the figures is a bit loose. What an impressive appearance they would make in a study, holding a few volumes in place on a shelf or atop a desk. This is a rare and difficult to find set. This is only the second time that we have come across such a pair and the first set sold out very quickly. We have priced this set at the same level as the earlier pair at $575.00.
