Submitted for your consideration is a museum quality cut crystal centerpiece bowl by T.J. Hawke’s and company. Tomas Gibson Hawkes founded his glass company in 1880 in Corning, New York and this firm remained in business until 1962. Hawkes was known as a high-end producer of beautiful etched glass and his wares were offered at the best Department Stores in the past two centuries. He would buy blank glass forms (primarily from Steuben), and he would then create exquisite designs that were proudly displayed in the finest of homes.

This particular work is an outstanding example of Hawkes’ artistry. The fine crystal is etched with beautiful images of fruits and leaves, a motif common to the Art Nouveau period. The bowl measures 5.75” in height and it is 12.5” in diameter. Note the lovely design of the strawberries, peaches and pears that form the basis of the design as well as the intricate floral embellishments of the piece. The bowl sits upon a sterling silver base and it is in near Mint condition. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines and the only flaw I could detect is a tiny flake at the bowl’s base that is hidden from view when the bowl rests inside its silver form.

The bowl sports the traditional Hawkes’ mark of a trefoil ring that encloses a fleur-de-lis, with hawks on both sides and the company’s name. This marking was only used until 1920 and this work most likely dates from the turn of the twentieth century. We have seen works by this manufacturer from this period sell for thousands of dollars, but we can offer this museum quality work for $750.00.
