Submitted for your consideration is stunning porcelain Pink Rose Moliere Bowl from the Kronach division of the German manufacturer Rosenthal. This over one hundred-year-old company is well known for its keen interest in Modern Art that is manifested in their exquisite creations. Founded in 1889 in Selb Bavaria by Phillip Rosenthal, the company is still in existence today producing high quality dinnerware and beautiful figurines. According to Judith Miller in her Buyer’s Guide to Ceramic Figures: “Rosenthal work is relatively underrated; it is probably the nearest equivalent to Meissen but is far more affordable.” We agree with Ms. Miller and believe that this makes for incredible bargains for collectors as well as for anyone else looking to enrich their home with beautiful artwork.

This particular work of art was made sometime from 1938 to 1952 as evidenced by the dish’s markings. It is a beautiful bowl whose character is not fully captured by the camera. The center of the bowl has a large pink rose with light and dark gray overtones. The stem and leaves take on this gray rather than green hue with the flower surrounded by nascent pink buds. The shape of the piece is exquisite. There are five reticulated decorations, each one separated by a scalloped design that is highlighted by pink lines, a silver rim, and incised white lines that lead one’s gaze to the center of the dish. The condition is outstanding with nary a chip, crack, scratch or any signs of crazing. We would place this on a coffee table in a living room, or in some other conspicuous location as it would be a crime to hide this beauty. The bowl is 9.5” wide and but 2” high.
