WOW!!! This is one AMAZING necklace!!!! I guess it is a butterfly... Sometimes I look at it and I think it is a fierce owl with big feathery "eye brows" and its wings curved out and down in a protective stance. But a butterfly sounds nicer, so I'm sticking with that. Or better yet, it can be what ever you want it to be depending on your mood.

The artistry in this necklace is fascinating! The design is intriguing, but it's depth makes it outstanding. Three different layers of silver merge to create this vintage beauty. I've posted photos from many different angles so you can see all of the layers. Remember, onions have layers, ogres have layers... and so do parfaits! Everybody likes a nice parfait!

But once again, I digress...

This magnificent necklace looks like a choker when worn, but it doesn't "choke" you. The silver sections can be easily and gently moved to widen the gap, making it easy to put on and remove. I can't stand to wear turtle neck shirts, but I can wear this necklace comfortably. It's hard to measure the length of the rounded sections of sterling, but as far as I can tell, the silver sections are approximately 5 inches long on each side, the gap in the back is 3 inches and the butterfly is 2.5 inches, giving a total of 15.5 inches around. Sounds small, but since this in open in the back it doesn't wear tight.

The "butterfly" section measures 1.5 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide. The turquoise inlay doesn't appear to have any damage. It is mixed with an enamel or enamel like material that fills in the areas around the stone and provides a smooth surface. There is one very small circle on the left side that look like where a bubble formed while the necklace was being made. It is only visible under bright light and magnification. There are a couple of small brownish spots that appear to be natural... not damage or missing stone.

Hallmarks indicate that this is a post 1979 piece, but is certainly not of recent production. I would estimate that this is from the earliest days of registration number usage. There is a hallmark that might be ornate initials or a symbol, which I cannot identify. There is also the registration mark TR-16 (an early number for Taxco) along with 925 and MEXICO.

This is an outstanding piece, the likes of which I've never seen before. Remember, if you like something, it probably means someone else does too. So grab it... impulsively if you must, as it may not be here when you get back.
