East or South East Indian origin is likely, where Buddhism is a heavy influence in art, but where there are a mixture of other influences including Hinduism and motifs from surrounding Asian cultures. Notice the face of the carving mirrors the faces of traditional Indian art. This one is estimated to be about 150 years old, or circa 1850. This carving is exquisitely and carefully rendered. The figure is shown holding a scroll, and has a staff. I believe it may depict a Buddhist missionary or traveling Buddha. The robes are heavily folded, and the head dress elaborate. Condition: due to age, and the fact that this is genuine elephant ivory, there are some age lines and patina, or color variations and changes to the piece. These conditions are minimal, add to the value and attractiveness, and help substantiate the age of this artwork. There is no damage. The head dress features a core that is original, where the central dark root of the tusk would have shown; the carver chose to place a plug and carve it to match the rest of the surrounding carving. There is an age line below this core. The piece is in remarkably good condition, near perfect. This is a spectacular and rare carving, one that will appreciate and be appreciated as time passes. Provenance: Gili Bronstein. This piece is priced substantially below market value.
