The unique, delicate design of flowing ribbons has such gentle and feminine movement. Some of the ribbons are painted in intricate designs. Beautiful flowers join the ribbons and add even more color and detail. Chrysanthemums and cherry blossoms are traditional florals used in kimonos like this one. Exuberance of color includes soft golds, greens, purples, deep and light salmon, pinks and an icy blue. No time or intricate design was spared in creating this piece which dates back to the late Taisho (1912-1926)/early Showa periods (early 20th century).
This kimono was sold to an antiques dealer in San Francisco by an elderly Asian couple. Wonderful, special kimonos like this one were worn by geisha's or by women of the court or privileged classes for formal occasions, perhaps for weddings or the cherry/plum blossom festivals. This Japanese Uchikake, or outer kimono, is constructed from a single panel of fabric. It has a matching Obi scarf.
To further set apart this magnificent kimono, it has been professionally framed, fitting for this dramatic piece of art. High-quality lucite encases the garment, front and back, with ivory brocade used on the inside edges. The finished piece measures approximately 5 feet in height and 4 1/2 feet across the width. It is heavy, even with the use of lucite. This framed art is ideal for wall display. It demands a large wall for its beauty to be enjoyed, loved and appreciated.
This piece ships only within the US. It will be professionally packaged and shipped for safety. Shipping and insurance will be determined at the time of sale. It will be costly to ship due to its size and weight, but it will be well worth it to enjoy this piece.
