This one piece, loose fitting dress is made with scarf weight silk chiffon, gorgeous lace and a special jewel accent. The closure is at one shoulder. The dress is meant to slip over the head.
The bodice is accented with simply wonderful lace. The lace is done on fine illusion in a pattern of lilies, lily pads and Queen Ann's Lace. It is superb. It is scalloped along the bottom and is attached to the bodice with MINUTE hand stitches.
The drop waist is accented with a wide sash, rosette and wide self fabric ribbon, as well as a length of that amazing lace. The rosette is accented with a rhinestone embellishment. PERFECT piece for this gown! The paste set, jewel accent, has prong set, cut glass rhinestones. They are set in brass with the metal having dainty bead work.
The skirt falls straight from the hip and ends at or just below mid calf. After World War I hems of dresses were still mid calf as the "FLAPPER LOOK" had not yet taken over the world! Bodices were unstructured, and the "line" of fashion was straight with attention at the neckline, hip and sometimes the hem of garments. This is a lovely, absolutely excellent, example of post World War I fashion.
The dress is entirely hand stitched. I thought perhaps the side seams were machine done, as the stitches are SO TINY and so even. But, there is some slight variation and with a magnifying loupe you can see where the ends of the threads were tied off. I don't know who made this dress, but their hand work is beyond amazing. This is heirloom quality, museum worthy, an excellent example of post World War I fashion.
Bust 36, waist ( not defined) 34, hip 36, center back to hem is 51 inches.
Condition is absolutely amazing. There are 3 tiny, tiny spots (less than the size of a pea) There are no weak, broken or torn seams. There is no under arm staining or odor. The fabric is strong. This dress, while delicate and almost light as a feather could be worn with confidence and care. DETAILS: There are two spots on the bodice right side, 3 inches down from the lace edging. One spot is 1/8 x 1/8 and one is 1/16 x 1/6 inches. There is one spot on the skirt below the draped waist about center front. It is 1/8 x 1/8 inches. These should be treated by a professional. There are two tiny pin holes in the skirt front. These are the size of a pin head and will not show when a slip is worn underneath. The fabric is , floaty, silk chiffon, in antique white.
If used as display or for museum purposes it will last another 80 years!
