Cyber Monday SALE At Toinette's E-mail for Details! ALL WEEK Long!
It was made in Walla Walla Washington . I will be happy to provide the makers name to the new owner. This lady spent her life making quilts. This is a magnificent example of her work. It is expertly executed with wonderful fabrics.
I am not an expert on quilt PATTERNS, but have spent much of my life studying fabrics. I believe the pattern is either a variation of or is one of the following: Bear Paw, GOOSE TRACKS, or Turkey Tracks. I would be happy to hear from anyone about identifying the pattern.
The fabrics date from 1900. There are feed / flour sack fabrics, men's shirt fabric, calicos, and gingham. The FIELD of the quilt is all one fabric that is pieced into the squares. The back of the quilt is done in two pieces of natural colored muslin. ALL fabrics are cotton. The batting is cotton, not wool. None of the fabrics is recycled from left over projects.
The quilt is 68 inches wide and 82 inches long. The pieced squares vary slightly in size with 9 & 3/4 x 9 & 3/4 inches being the dominant. The pink squares are the same.
The quilting is done at 10 stitches per inch. I randomly selected 6 areas of the quilt and all have this 10 stitch gage. It also confirms that the quilt was done by one person. The hand quilting is done diagonally, in straight lines that are 1 & 1/4 inch apart. The quilting lines are absolutely straight and even.
The backing is put together with a FLAT FRENCH SEAM. Looking with a loupe I see the patchwork pieces are machine done, with cotton thread. The edges are also machine done. (she used a Singer treadle machine).
Condition is ABOVE EXCELLENT. It was laundered one time to try and remove 4 stains. They are at one end, light yellow and vary from 1 x 1 inch to 4 x 4 inches, and are all together. I believe they may be urine. There is no odor. This has been hand soaked and then IONIZED to remove any odors or bacteria. There are no holes, weak seams, broken stitches or worn spots. The quilt has never been used.
Colors are MAGNIFICENT. Fabrics are beautiful, crisp and a delight to the eye. It would be stunning hanging on a large wall, as a centerpiece to your collection. Please view all pictures and let me know if you need to discuss the quilt via telephone.
