Cyber Monday SALE At Toinette's E-mail for Details! ALL WEEK Long!
This beautifully decorated early pyrographed wooden box is very well made. It is lavishly embellished with the image of an Alphonse Mucha ( noted Czechoslovakian artist) style Nouveau Lady complete with a jeweled headdress. She is in profile framed with apple blossoms and two scrolls. (meant to hold an endearment, initial or a name.)
The inside of the lid has the same motif. The sides have a wood grain design. This is an unusual find in that this box was not used, or colored in. Written in pencil on the bottom is an endearment from the giver to the recipient.
The brass hinges are stamped: WIZARD, F. Grammes & Sons: ALLENTOWN, PA. ( the hinges show patina and I only know what they say because some of the other boxes from this collection have the same hinges.
I believe this is a stationery box. It could also be used for jewelry / vanity box or handkerchiefs. This piece measures 6 x 6 inches and is just SHY of 1 & 1/2 inch high. The work is excellent. This piece is in very good condition noting: some discoloration from the brass hinges & nails having gotten damp and bleeding into the wood. See the pictures for the very fine condition.
