This is a set of six hand-painted ceramic musicians, housing pencil sharpeners within their bases. These were sold all over the world to school children, around 1940-1950; this set is new-from-old-stock. It was made in China. Condition is excellent except for occasional rust on the blades of the sharpeners. They were a little before my time, but I have met original owners (as children) of other examples of these sharpeners in France, Belgium, Holland, Britain, Canada, and the U.S., so I am pretty clear on the date--although a lot of people will tell you they are earlier because of the quality and detail. About 2 to 2.5 inches high, each one. This is really a rare find, a complete original set in non played-with condition.
