In the 19th century, samplers were wildly popular in France; education had been made obligatory, and for girls of 5 to 15 years, so were samplers, because the idea of girls' education was skewed towards home ec. This is a classic model, particularly for the region of Flanders: it's an 11 by 12 inch canvas, called a "red and white," with the alphabet; the place name, Lille; the numerals; "La Sagesse,"--Wisdom; and the girl's name, Florence d'Hellemmes. That name is a well-known last name for French aristocracy. This sampler may have been a kind of punishment task, since sagesse, when applied to children, commonly means 'being well-behaved.' Good Condition.
