Big Sale Going On Now!
Measuring about 9 by 11.75 inches, this is an antique coloured engraving signed, M. Haranz, and entitled, Paris--Cabaret du Lapin Agile a Montmartre (in pencil.) The white border is about 2.5 inches wide, except at the top where it measures 1.5 inches. This adds up to a total dimension of about 13 by 16 inches. Comparing the thickness of the tree to that in other paintings of the same scene, I judge this to date to circa 1900. Also, I have a framer's label, which I believe to be original, with a 3-digit phone number. You could go by various architectural changes in this place over the 20th century as well, since the Lapin Agile is still there, and still being painted. This seems like an engraving versus a lithograph because I can feel the texture of the lines in the drawing. This is apparently number one of one. I could be wrong, but in any case this is a very old, very good landscape with a lot of character, looking almost haunted and Halloweeny with the ramshackle building flanked by overpruned trees and an overcast Paris sky. There are some foxing and folds at the borders.
