Signed, G. Bernard, and dated 18?6, this is an oil-on-canvas portrait of a scottish terrier in its original stretcher. On the back is a stamp by the framer. This 19th century French picture has the pleasing elements of a good subject lovingly and skillfully rendered. The painting measures 6.5 by 8.5 inches. It is in good condition for its age, having paint loss at the four corners where the canvas is stretched over the wood, being cracked and dry, and having about 12 pinpricks (like dead pixels), notably those above the eyebrow. The lowish price takes the flaws into account. Really good animal portraits are a bit thin on the ground, especially antique ones, and this is a treasure, down to the Empire blue silk "passementerie" around his neck.
