This sweet little engraving from the mid- to later-1800s belonged to our great aunt. It is entitled "New Hampshire Scenery," and is a water scene that shows a lake near which two men have been fishing. It is framed in an absolutely stunning, carved walnut Victorian era frame with a gilt "mat."

This is NOT a reproduction, it is all original.

DIMENSIONS: The frame is 13 inches wide by 11 inches long. The "mat" is yellow gold encrusted gilt over wood, 1/2 inch wide. The glass size over the engraving is 7-3/4 inches long by 5-3/4 inches high.

This is marked Painted by R. W. Hubbard Engraved by W. Wellstood. At the right are Hubbard's initials in the engraving, RWH beside a Roman numeral XII.

The frame is fabulous, solid walnut wood, just under 3/4-inch thick. The top edges are carved, and at each corner a carving is affixed (which to us resembles a pine cone but may be a leaf). The 1/ 2-inch-wide gilt covered wood “mat” around the image adds depth to the frame. The backing is the original, thin pine board. There is NO damage of any kind to the frame -- no chips, gouges or missing pieces!

We do not like to remove artwork from original frames -- so we are offering this as found and will stand behind it. It has been on Auntie's wall for at least the last 60 years that we can vouch for. The only thing we can find wrong with it is that it would benefit from being taken apart and cleaned, but it displays very acceptably as is. The paper shows signs of gentle age darkening but there are no rips, tears, holes or creases. The gilt shows the light cracks expected with age. The frame is perfect, as noted above.

A very nice find for anyone who enjoys 19th century American landscape engravings, especially someone who collects New Hampshire or New England prints.
