The pattern is "Platinum Blue," with pale silvery-gray blue base ware (resembling Buffalo China's "Blue Lune"); the decoration is all white: rim bands and "cameos" of classic nude figures. This pattern was used by the New Haven RR in their formal dining cars; "Merchants" ware was used in their grill cars.
CONDITION: Extremely nice and a beautiful display! Absolutely NO cracks, chips, flakes, spider cracks or repairs! We could not find any surface scratches on the cup which looks like it may never have been used. The saucer has a few light surface marks around the cup-rim in the well (which are hard to see, you must tilt the saucer in bright light). The saucer also has an insignificant glaze flaw on the bottom rim, and there is a tiny fleck of brown color in the glaze on the top rim.
IMPORTANT: Probably our worst criticism (to nit-pick) is that although the piece shapes are completely appropriate together and both are authentic Railroad china, they are a "marriage" of manufacturers: the cup was made by Buffalo China and the saucer by Lamberton Scammell. As a result, the color of the cup is slightly darker than the saucer which appears lighter, but this is not terribly noticeable unless you look closely. However, because it's not a perfect marriage, we've priced this pair accordingly.
New Haven demi sets are missing from most collections of railway passenger dining car china. Here is a chance to obtain a good one!
