This beautiful sterling silver souvenir spoon dates from the late 1800s - early 1900s.

It is embossed STERLING above the initials E.L.D. which stand for its manufacturer, the E. L. Dayton Company of Denver, Colorado, a famous maker of high quality silver souvenir spoons around the turn of the 20th Century. It is a teaspoon size, just over 5 inches long.

If you are looking for a beautiful Colorado spoon, look no further!

In its bowl is depicted the famous Royal Gorge, Canon City, Colorado with its steep mountain sides sweeping above the river and the famous Suspension Bridge. In the foreground can be seen a tiny steam locomotive pulling a passenger train - depicting the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. All of this is done in wonderfully sharp, clear embossed lettering and artwork.

At the top of the handle is the State Seal of Colorado, with the state motto Nil Sine Numine -- Latin meaning "Nothing without the Deity," or roughly translated, "Nothing without providence." Below that is a miner, standing with a pickax above the word COLORADO which streams down the stem to the bowl.

On the back of the spoon are raised scenes of Colorado interest. At the top is a cowboy riding a bucking horse, below which is embossed CATTLE RAISING above a scene of ranch cattle; below that is embossed PLOWING, above a farmer is plowing a field; and below MINE & SHAFT, above mining equipment lowering a bucket down a very long shaft that reaches all the rest of the way down the stem of the spoon.

CONDITION: Extremely nice, no nicks, dents or twists, no scratches. The only thing less than "perfect" is that on the back, there is a rub on the cowboy's knee which can't be seen unless you use a magnifying glass. There is no wear on the back of the bowl and no signs of use.

Please forgive our photos - we've tried to show close-up details, and it's very hard to do that along with trying to photograph silver!

We have found other ELD spoons, and they seem to attract higher prices than we are offering ours for -- but we want ours to move! So enjoy the savings.

This of course is not a railroad dining car spoon, but if you enjoy railroad silver or the D&RG a railway theme on it may be of interest. It would also be a very nice gift to a Colorado lover!
