Here is a great ash tray from the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad that includes a molded-in matchbook holder. This attractive piece is in the “Silhouette” pattern, stunning in crisp black on bright white, made by Buffalo China.

It is in excellent+ condition with only the lightest of surface marks expected from age and use (must tilt it in bright light to find any). There is no age yellowing and absolutely no stains or discoloration. No cracks, chips, flakes, spiders or repairs. Dimensions: approximately 7-1/4 inches wide x 3-1/2 inches across x 1 inch deep.

On the front of this ashtray is extremely sharp and clear lettering: George Washington's Railroad / Chesapeake and Ohio Lines / Original Predecessor Company Founded by George Washington in 1785" (Our photo may not be as sharp as it should be -!) Inside, a silhouette of George Washington graces the matchbook slot.

The style of lettering in the Buffalo China bottom stamp dates this piece between 1915 and the 1940s. According to The Official Guide to Railroad Dining Car China (McIntyre) “Silhouette” may have been used for afternoon tea service in conjunction with a similar but more colorful pattern called “George Washington.”

A very nice addition to any collection of railroad passenger dining car items, also a fine vintage tobacciana or smoking collectible!
