This horse was part of a small series created by an artist named Donald Brindley who sculpted for Goebel in the late 1980s. Brindley, who studied art and sculpture in London and became a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors, was entranced by the nobility and temperament of horses and took great pains to realistically create figurines.
Unfortunately, however, Goebel executives apparently did not appreciate horses as Brindley did. This production did not last very long and the series was retired quickly. Consequently, these statues are very hard to find and seldom offered for sale. This is the only one I have ever seen in person and was fortunate enough to be able to purchase it.
This big fellow is approximately the same size as a "Traditional" size Breyer (their most familiar, largest size) -- we've shown him for comparison with Breyer's "Proud Arabian Stallion" model. The Goebel horse, just very slightly smaller than this Breyer, stands an impressive nearly 9 inches tall at the top of his ears.
Take a look at the photos - he clearly was hand painted in a beautiful matte finish -- a lifelike shaded mahogany bay body color with black points, a blaze on his face and four white socks (almost exactly the color of the ill-fated race horse Barbaro ). The eyecatching color brings out the wonderful sculpting detail in his muscles and body conformation -- Thoroughbred to the nth degree.
CONDITION: There is absolutely nothing wrong with this figurine, not even rubs on his ear tips. He is in absolutely as new condition with no signs of use or wear.
This is an incredible find for a horse lover and would be a prize in any collection of better porcelain figurines, or for a Goebel collector who appreciates short-lived Goebel productions.
