CONDITION: The vase is beautiful old glass, with at least one thin straw mark and a tiny bubble or possibly two adding character. There is a very thin scratch across the front panel approximately 1-1/4 inches below the flower, and there are some very shallow bumps on the edges of several sides (these are difficult to see and best found with a fingernail).
The mounting bracket is good sturdy metal, possibly steel, that originally was plated. It is angled so the vase can be inserted in one direction, and there are three recessed areas pressed into it that correspond to the “bumps” on the glass -- tightly securing the vase in the holder no matter how bumpy the ride! Most of the plating (probably nickel) has worn away, but some remains on the inside of the arms. There is overall light rust that is strictly on the surface. If I were going to keep this piece I would use extra fine steel wool on the bracket and consider having it replated, but it displays very well in its present condition.
A very nice find for a vintage auto collector - ! I am not sure when these went out of style, but the early cars certainly were built to impress! Apparently these beautiful vases were also used in horse drawn hearses and other Victorian era vehicles in the late 1800s before they found their way onto the dashboards of many early autos.
