Here is a very nice top- and bottom-marked New York Central Railroad “Mercury” pattern grapefruit dish or cereal bowl. It is 1-1/2 inches tall and is just under 6 inches across (including a ½ inch flat rim).

This dish is in excellent condition with strong, bright glaze and absolutely no physical damage such as cracks, chips, flakes or hairlines. There are only a very few very light utensil surface scratches that cannot be seen unless you tilt the dish in bright light.

It is top marked NYC in orange on an ivory base, plus railroad bottom marked as well: DESIGN COPYRIGHTED MADE ESPECIALLY FOR NEW YORK CENTRAL. Also backstamped Syracuse China U.S.A. 9-JJ (date code September 1955).

This dish would be a very nice addition to any collection of railway passenger dining car items, especially for a New York or mid Atlantic collector where the New York Central ran.
