This attractive little crock was made between 1858 and 1881 by Edward & Luman P. Norton of Bennington, Vermont. It is a lovely example of early New England stoneware pottery. E.& L. P. NORTON BENNINGTON VT. is impressed on the front above a shaded blue floral decoration which looks like a leaf or possibly a fern. The blue contrasts beautifully with the pleasing, lightly speckled base color. There is no number designation but it holds approximately 1 - 1-1/2 gallons. It is just over 7 inches tall and is 8-1/4 inches across the top. It has a double line incised around the body beneath the stamping.
This crock is in very nice, sound condition with no chips, cracks or structural problems. Both "ears" are undamaged and firmly attached. It does have several extremely shallow edge flakes (2 on the top rim, 1 on the bottom rim) and also some lime residue inside (we have not cleaned this off). Also, on the back is a 2-inch circular area of some staining - but of course this does not show at all from the front. PLEASE LOOK AT ALL THE PHOTOS! Over the crock's left ear is a glaze run that may be a professional repair of a surface hairline - we can't be positive because if it is a repair it is "that" good.
This crock would be a very nice addition to any collection of antique North American pottery. It would look really great displayed holding a dried floral arrangement.
