SATISFACTION GUARANTEED ~ Holiday Layaways ~ Multi-Purchase Discounts ~& a 1950s STEIFF TURKEY Looking for a Holiday Table!!
We believe this tray is "Early American Pressed Glass," or EAPG. Crystal clear in old glass, it is approximately 9 inches wide and 12 inches long. Its deep rim stands a full 1 inch tall. The top is perfectly smooth, with a highly detailed design impressed crisply into the bottom side of the glass. The pattern on the sides looks almost like lacy glass with a leaf and sharply pebbled background design. The train design in the center was almost certainly done from a photograph, with an 1800s steam locomotive hauling a combination car, followed by two passenger cars. Both engine and tender are marked " 350 ". The conductor and fireman can be seen in the cab -- thanks to the very sharp molding, you can even see their facial features!
CONDITION: Absolutely no chips, cracks, flakes or repairs. There are 2 or 3 light surface scratches that can't be seen unless you hold the plate up to the light and look for them. There are a few somewhat rough spots that are molding imperfections along the top rim edge, and a very light straw mark or two, but that is not damage.
We've seen reproductions of this old plate. The repros can be distinguished by poor glass quality; sloppy, blurry molding on the train design instead of sharp, photograph-like detail; and strong new colors.
