This big tall globe Delaware & Hudson Railroad signal lantern In “The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Railroad Lighting Vol. 1,” lantern authority Richard Barrett identifies this as a “DRE-3,” double guard, wire bottom, tall globe lantern made by the Dressel Company.

This lantern is correctly marked with a factory-applied D&H Co. band soldered on the side of its smoke dome. On the very top, the smoke dome is stamped DRESSEL / ARLINGTON, N.J.

The globe is a tall globe -- 5-3/8" high, and beautifully embossed “the D&H” in the railway’s script logo. On the opposite side, it is cast with the horseshoe shaped Cnx and MADE IN USA markings of its maker, Corning Glass.

This lantern needs nothing to enjoy it except a display shelf to sit on; or it is well worth restoration. There is only the light surface rust and absolutely no holes or pitting. The frame is as straight as they come, sound and solid with no bends, breaks or twists. It is complete with pot and burner and fins inside the smoke dome. To nitpick, there are two very shallow dents on the top of the smoke dome that can be pushed back out.

A very nice find for a better collection of railway lanterns, especially for a railfan from the New York or New England region.
