This attractive accessory would have been found originally in a late 1800s library, study or drawing room. It is made of solid brass and is in lovely condition with a very appealing warm patina from age and no breaks, splits, dents or twists.
It consists of two end brackets and a sliding tubular frame on which books may be stood. The tubular frame is 12-1/2 inches long when not extended, but when pulled out to its full length offers 23 inches of space to accommodate additional books. It works easily without resistance.
At each end of the rack is a solid brass panel, on which an owl perches amid pine branches and pine cones. The brass panel is 1/8 inch thick, but the impressed owl relief extends a full 5/8 inch, giving the bird tremendous definition and depth. Details on the pine cones, individual pine needles and the bird’s beak and even the rings on its toes are sharp and clearly visible.
We were surprised because of its quality of workmanship that this piece carries no manufacturer’s markings. The only markings are a number 513 stamped on the back of the base of the owls at each end.
We have left it as we found it with remnants of old polish here and there, from a previous owner. These can be removed if desired. Also, although it is currently a darker, mellow intensity, this metal should easily polish up into a sparkling "bright brass" if desired.
This rack would be a fine addition to a study, den or library for holding books (yes, it will work for DVDs also), or as a conversation piece for anyone who enjoys owls.
