This now-defunct railroad served their tourist passengers with quality Shenango restaurantware china. The green stamped Indian design bottom marking and date codes D-43 and D-44 date these pieces at the mid-1980s, which is confirmed by Barbara Conroy’s Restaurant China Vol. 2.
Each piece carries two designs: on the “right” side of all three is the state seal of Georgia surrounded by the railway name; on the “left” side of the sugar and creamer is a “portrait” of the Southern Railroad (SR) diesel engine #6901; on the “left” side of the teapot is a portrait of Atlanta & West Point (A&WPRR) steam locomotive #290. The creamer is 3" tall at the tip of the spout. It is possible the sugar may be a bouillon cup but it’s possible the railroad used bouillon cups instead of formal sugar bowls.
These pieces are absolutely pristine, with one tiny exception: the only damage we could find was inside the tea pot, on the underside of the inner rim: a very shallow, 1/4-inch long flake that does not show unless you are looking for it, and you must be in just the right position to see it (we’ve provided a photograph that shows it, but as you can see it does not show in the photo looking down into the pot).
This is a very collectible set, being from a real railroad (now out of business) that used china for over-the-rails passengers – the price is low since New Georgia is a newer line. This china is going to appreciate rather than depreciate. A forward-looking addition to any collection of railway dining car china, especially for someone from the State of Georgia or the South.
