Offered for sale is this First Day Cover Commemorating The Raising of The American Flag and The Capture of Iwo Jima - March 14, 1945. The art work was done by Fluegel in which he depicts the Raising of The American Flag by the Marines on Iwo Jima with a silhouette of a Bugler and three U.S. Warships in the distance.

He also listed the events of the Iwo Jima Campaign in chronological order: The Japanese were Bombed 74 days before D-Day; The Marines 4th Division landed Feb. 19th 9 a.m.; 80,000 Japanese Casualties and 4,000 Marines Killed; Iwo Held by Japanese for 30 years and was Captured in 24 Days. Also on the envelope are two 3 Cent Stamps titled Iwo Jima showing the Marines raising the American Flag on Iwo. This First Day Cover measures 3½” long x 6¼” wide. The wood frame measures 6” long x 8” wide x ¾” thick.

This First Day Cover is very special because it was postmarked July 26, 1945, 8:30 a.m., in San Diego, California, by Pfc Raymond W. Ward, Service Number 39018937, A. 129th Field Artillery Battalion Bn, APO 32. c/o Post Master, San Francisco, California. His home address was Ray F. Ward, 1275 Hendricks Ave, San Diego, California. The correct issue date should have been postmarked July 11, 1945, Washington D.C. We can only guess this soldier just arrived in the states or perhaps was on his last tour of duty before buying this first day cover with a later postmark. I guess we can only imagine what happened.

Please click "Larger Views" right below the large photo to get a better look at this very nice First Day Cover.

Condition: The First Day Cover and the wood frame are in Near Mint Condition. There are two chips in the bottom part of the front of the frame.

What a wonderful historic piece of WWII Marine Memorabilia. A great gift to give to the Marine in your family. God Bless Our Vets!
