His coverage of the WWII military campaign earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 1944 and several other awards. While in the Pacific Theater of Operation on Iowa Jima during the Okinawa Campaign he visited the nearby island of la Shima where he was killed by Japanese machine-gun fire. The soldiers paid tribute to their fallen friend with a simple plague reading, "At this post, the 77th Infantry Division lost a Buddy, Ernie Pyle, April 18th, 1945". Throughout WWII millions of Americans back home were kept abreast of what their sons and daughters were going though while serving in the Armed Forces because they knew Ernie Pyle was giving them the honest facts they needed to know.
