Offered for sale is Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens and Selected Poems of John Masefield, both WWII Armed Services Edition Books, Condensed for Wartime Reading. Both are published by Editions for the Armed Services, Inc., a non-profit organization establishes by The Council on Books in Wartime, New York. Over the life of the program more than 123 million books were published and 1322 different titles were made available to servicemen from 1943 to 1946. The book was designed to fit in a serviceman's pocket so he could pull it out anytime and anywhere to read. Below is a description of each book and also its condition:

Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens; paperback book; Book No. 691; Measures 6 7/16” wide x 4 7/16” long x ¾” thick; 512 pages; **Condition: The outside cover is in good condition. There is light wear on the front and back covers, some creases at the corners of the front and back covers, wear along the spine, minor chipping at the top and bottom of the spine, and very minor wear along the edges of the front and back covers. The inside pages are in very good condition.

Selected Poems of John Masefield with an Introduction by Louis Untermeyer; paperback book; Book No. 820; Measures 5 7/16” wide x 3¾” long x 5/16” thick; 192 pages; Table of Contents include: A Consecration; The Everlasting Mercy; Dauber; Biography; Cargoes; Sea Fever; Spanish Waters; An Old Song Re-sung; The West Wind; On Malvern Hill; Fragments; Tewkesbury Road; Sonnets; and August 1914. **Condition: The outside cover is in good condition. There is light wear to the front and back covers, a crease mark at each corner, light wear along the spine, and chipping at the top and bottom of the spine. The inside pages are in very good condition.

Since most of these books were heavily read by servicemen and women during WWII, it is rare to find them in good or very good condition. Also the paper used to make these books was of poor quality.
