Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest was a self-made man who had lead a colorful and exciting life prior to joining the Confederate Army and the life he lead during the war was no less eventful. His masterful use of his cavalry both in battle and for hit-and-run raids were tactics so effective they were said to have enraged General U.S. Grant. Among the many battles in which he fought were Shiloh, the First and Third Battles of Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Fort Pillow, Brice's Crossroads, and the Battle of Nashville. After the war Forrest was accused of war crimes for events that took place at the end of the Battle of Fort Pillow in Henning, Tennessee. African American soldiers in the defeated Union Army garrison who were unarmed were summarily executed instead of being allowed to surrender. The U.S. Congress eventually cleared him of the charges. A skilled and fearless horseman, the genius of Forrest's novel mobile tactics are still studied and used by modern forces today. He died in 1877 in Memphis, Tennessee.

This and other Confederate Civil War CDV's in my shop were all found in one individual Carte de Visite album, along with the personal photos of a Texas family. If you buy more than one at the same time they can be shipped in the same package to save you money on shipping/insurance costs. Just wait for me to adjust the final invoice and send you the adjusted total before you pay.

Back mark: "E. and H.T. Anthony - 501 Broadway, New York, Manufacturers of the best Photographic Albums." Gold double-line border, corners clipped, as was commonly done to CDV's for inserting them into the paper frames of albums. A very good image of the General in fine condition. It has a tiny peck in the surface of the background just above and to the right of his head which can be seen under magnification, a 1/4 inch light scratch at the upper edge of the image and some overall darkening to the background. The card stock has darkened at the bottom edge on the front and this shows up as a wider line on the reverse of the card. Inscribed, "Forrest" in pencil below the image.
