Soapstone is a type of metamorphic rock that consists mainly of an unrefined form of talc. It is very soft and easy to work. This wonderful Chinese soapstone vase has intricately carved lotus flowers and leaves on a stem that is on the front of the vase. The carving is very three dimensional and realistic looking! The artist has added a single bird at the base of the stem and intricately cut out designs on each side of this huge vase. This elongate vase and carved floral decoration is done in shades of beige that has a hint of green. Patches of black and brown are seen on the flat backside and a few are on the front. The beautiful vase portion is attached to its own carved dark brown soapstone base. The four footed base has been carved to appear like an intertwined root system. In excellent condition with no chips or cracks!
