Artist Ruth (Barnett) Sturgeon, (1883-1940) is best known as a Kansas born artist that moved to the Pasadena,CA area in 1924 to pursue painting and teaching. She taught at South Pasadena High School as an art instructor, where she was murder while in the classroom on May 9, 1940.
Barnett-Sturgeon was a member of Western AA, a pupil of Louisa Card Carltin and George Senseney. Biographical references can be found in Edan Hughes “Artist in California, 1786-1940’’ as well as in the book by Susan Craig “Biographical Dictionary of Kansas Artist (active before 1945)’’.
The image is painted on a cotton canvas panel with a size of 18’’ x 24’’. The frame appears to be the original weathered barn wood style, medium grey shades throughout. Overall size is 28 1/2 ’’ x 22 1/2’’. This piece dates to between 1935 and 1939, just prior to her death.
